In a five-card online casino games, each player receives one card placed face down and one card placed face up. The player with the highest visible card opens the first betting round. After the first betting round, another face up card is dealt to each player and the player with the best visible hand opens the next betting round.

The cycle of dealing and opening continues until each player is in possession of one face-down card and four cards that are facing up. At this point, four betting rounds will have passed. The player left with the best hand is the winner.

Often, five-card stud poker games are played with interesting variations. For example, in a Roll Your Own game, each player is dealt two initial cards in a face down position. Each player selects, on a count of three, one of his or her cards to place facing up. After this betting round, each player is dealt another face-down card and the players decide which of their cards to turn up--on another count of three. This cycle of play continues until the players are each in possession of one face-down card and four cards that are visible to all. In other variations of this game, the face-down card that each player holds at the end of the hand is the wild card for that player.
